While this might be controversial, looking at what the Bible plainly says casts doubt on the mainstream idea that Hell is a place of eternal torment. First, consider what it says about what happens when we die. Many times it is described as sleeping indicating that the spirit without the body is not conscious. In Revelation those who aren’t saved are resurrected before dying again. Why do this if spirits are conscious and could be properly judged without a body?

Then consider that only those who are saved will have eternal life. To be tormented for eternity you have to have a body. Especially since the Bible hints that spirits without a body aren’t conscious! So eternal torment would be contradictory and impossible.

Finally, in Revelation the fate of all those not saved is the Lake of Fire. Death is also thrown in. Clearly this is symbolic because I doubt the concept of death would be tormented in flames forever. So what is happening is that the concept of death is destroyed. Without Jesus there is no eternal life only eternal destruction. Though it’s hard for some to accept, the Bible says that those who aren’t saved will disappear forever. Also many times in the Bible when it says something will burn forever it’s saying that it’s destruction will be forever. After all Sodom and Gomorrah aren’t still burning to this day are they?

What do you guys think? I’m thinking of writing a blog post on it.

Sure, friend, I think it would be a good blog post. You make a good argument, but we shouldn’t discount the possibility the writers just didn’t think about those contradictions. It’s not a good look that almost all Christians have got this wrong for centuries if what you say is true.
